Matt Hockenberry pitched into the eighth inning, scattering six hits while surrendering one run to lead Temple past Memphis at FedEx Park on Friday night, 3-1.

Hockenberry tossed 114 pitches, 76 for strikes. He walked two and struck out three in the American Athletic Conference opener for both clubs.

The Owls opened the scoring in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Robert Amaro. Temple added another run in the eighth via a fielding error. 

Memphis answered with a run in the eighth before Temple relievers Tim McCarthy and Zach Batchelor closed out the contest.

Caleb Wallingford, who entered Friday ranked 11th in the nation in earned run average, was saddled with the loss for Memphis, surrendering two runs, one earned, over 7 2 /3 innings. He struck out nine.

The two teams resume their three game series Saturday at FedEx Park with first pitch scheduled for 2 P.M.

In other local conference action

  • (A10) UMass 7  La Salle 6  -  The Minutemen scored a pair of runs in the 10th to trump the Explorers with the winning run scoring on a Shawn O'Neill wild pitch. Mark Williams and Joey Ravert each collected a pair of RBIs in the losing effort.
  • (A10) Saint Joseph's 13  George Washington 1  -  Tommy Cunningham stroked his third home run of the season and finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Stefan Kancylarz went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Chris Hueth chipped in with three RBIs.
