World Series Replay: Eisenreich shines as Phils sweep Jays in replay BY Patrick Gordon November 1, 2011 pgordon@philadelphiabaseballreview.com ______________________________________ Occasionally, the Review uses Diamond Mind Baseball to create, replay or simulate a series that has historical importance to Philadelphia. In this instance, we replayed the 1993 World Series between the Blue Jays and Phillies. This replay used the actual starting lineups and pitching match-ups from the ‘93 Series. Both clubs were managed by a human to ensure proper strategy and player usage. Game 1: Dave Hollins drilled a three-run home run to left center off closer Duane Ward in the ninth inning to break a 4-4 tie and ultimately give the Phillies a 7-4 win. Toronto jumped ahead in the third inning with three runs on a Devon White double and a Joe Carter single. The Phillies answered in the fifth with Lenny Dykstra’s three-run home run, and took the lead in the sixth on Milt Thompson’s solo blast. Pat Border’s solo home run in the eighth tied the contest at 4-4. Curt Schilling allowed four runs on seven hits over eight innings to collect the win. Mike Timlin surrendered a single to Dykstra in the ninth and was saddled with the loss. Game 2: Jim Eisenreich finished 5-for-5 with two runs scored to pace a Phillies offense that exploded for 15 hits in an 11-1 pounding of the Blue Jays. Terry Mulholland tossed a complete game, scattering four hits and two walks. He struck- out five. Dave Stewart surrendered six runs, five earned, over 5 1/3 innings in the loss.  Lenny Dykstra, John Kruk, Dave Hollins, and Pete Incaviglia each collected two hits apiece. Game 3: Jim Eisenreich again led the Phillies offense, driving in three runs while finishing 2-for-4 to lift the Phillies to a 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays at Veterans Stadium. Pat Hentgen allowed six hits and walked six over five innings in the loss. The Phillies bullpen tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Danny Jackson who picked up the win, allowing one run over six innings. Game 4: Tommy Greene hurled a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits, and Jim Eisenreich collected a pair of RBIs to lead the Phillies to a 5-0 win and a (replayed) world championship. Todd Stottlemyre surrendered five walks, five hits and four runs over five innings in the losing effort. Most Valuable Player: Jim Eisenreich hit .611 (11-for-18) and finished tied with Dave Hollins for the series lead in RBIs with six. Interesting Facts: Ricky Henderson (0-for-16), Paul Molitor (1-for-15) and John Olerud (1-for-13) hit a combined .045 (2-for-44) in the replay, as opposed to the .333 (21-for-63) the trio hit in the ‘93 Series ... Overall, Toronto hit .159 in the replay ... Tommy Greene was shelled in Game 4 of the actual ‘93 Series and failed to get out of the third inning, allowing seven runs on four walks and seven hits.
